Please join us for lunch on April 13, 2023, as we engage in a conversation with John Miller, CFA, Head of  Municipals at Nuveen, about the current state of affairs in the state and local municipal fixed income market. In addition to Illinois and Chicago, John will also discuss the national situation and provide an update on the latest industry trends. He will also reflect on his nearly quarter-century of tenure managing the Nuveen High Yield Municipal Fund and discuss the lessons he has learned throughout his career in the industry. The conversation will be moderated by CFA Society of Chicago Distinguished Speaker Series Advisory Group member, Cosmin Lucaci, CFA.

Speaker Bio:
John Miller leads the municipals fixed income strategic direction and investment perspectives for Nuveen. He also manages several municipal bond strategies and closed-end funds. John is a trusted public voice in discussing key issues and trends within the municipal market. He is a frequent guest on CNBC, Bloomberg Television and Fox Business News. His perspective is often sought out by leading industry media such as The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, Bloomberg News and Morningstar.

John became the Head of Nuveen Municipals in August of 2018 with the integration of the Nuveen Asset Management (NAM) and TIAA Investments municipals team. Before being named NAM's co-head of fixed income in 2011, he was chief investment officer for the firm’s municipal bond team starting in 2007. He was named head of portfolio management for Nuveen Asset Management in 2006. John became a portfolio manager in 2000 after starting at the firm as a municipal credit analyst in 1996. He began working in the investment industry at a private account management firm in 1993.

John graduated with a B.A. in Economics and Political Science from Duke University, an M.A. in Economics from Northwestern University, and an M.B.A. in Finance, with honors, from the University of Chicago. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the CFA institute and the CFA society of Chicago.

Moderator Bio:
Cosmin is the Director of Research at Brownson, Rehmus & Foxworth (BRF). Cosmin is a member of BRF’s Private Investment, Public Markets, Impact Investing, and Investment Strategy Committees. As a member of the research department, Cosmin helps in designing and implementing the company’s investment strategies as well as identifying investment managers.

Prior to joining BRF, Cosmin was at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. In his time there he worked on several projects, including co-authoring a study that was presented at the Federal Reserve’s annual Bank Structure Conference and subsequently published in the Journal of Financial Services Research.

Cosmin received his MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and his BA in Economics and Political Science from Northwestern University. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst. Outside of work, Cosmin enjoys civic service, connecting people, and giving back. Cosmin has served on the Trustee/Director Boards of several civic organizations, including The UL Boys and Girls Club, Chicago Engineers’ Foundation, CFA Society of Chicago, and the Chicago Booth School of Business Alumni Club. Cosmin is a member of The Chicago Club, The Executives’ Club of Chicago, and the Union League Club of Chicago.
