This course provides an introduction to Python for financial data analysis. Finance, Investment and Trading professionals will learn the skills to apply Python in their jobs. Throughout the course Python will be used to analyze various financial datasets.
Format: Two sessions of 3.5 hours each
Description Session 1: Introduction to Python - Tuesday, June 10, 2025
This hands-on course provides an introduction to Python for data analysis. We cover importing various types of data into Python, cleaning and processing data, and using basic analytical functions. We will cover Python programming concepts including data types, functions, and useful packages, with an emphasis on replicating analytics traditionally performed in Microsoft Excel. The course will be taught using Python and interactive web-based notebooks.
Attendees will leave with an understanding of how to use Python to work with data and perform analytics, as well as manipulating and creating output in Microsoft Excel.
Description Session 2: Python for Data Analysis - Thursday, June 12, 2025
This hands-on tutorial provides exposure to performing complex analytical tasks and preparing data for modeling using Python. Using interactive examples, we address manipulation and handling of numerical, categorical, and time series data, as well as exploratory data analysis and visualization. The course will be taught using Python and interactive web-based notebooks.
Attendees will leave with the ability to manipulate, describe, explore, and visualize data using Python.

Professor Mark Fenner earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Pittsburgh while specializing in artificial intelligence and machine learning. He also has a graduate degree in mathematics. Mark has been teaching these subjects to varied academic and corporate audiences for 20 years. After several years as a professor, Mark moved to industry and pursued DARPA funded research at the intersection of machine learning, computer security, and software engineering. He has spent substantial time developing novel computational solutions for bioinformatics, financial time series, and computer vision. Mark works across the data science spectrum from C, Fortran, and Python implementation to statistical analysis and visualization. Over the past few years, he has focused on training and curriculum development for the Python data science community. Recently, Mark completed a Pearson title “Machine Learning with Python for Everyone”, which introduces machine learning to non-specialists. With Kaplan/Metis, Mark has delivered training to top-tier financials, manufacturers, and boutique consultancies. He has developed curricula in Python, general machine learning, data science, deep learning and computer vision for Fortune 50 clients.
